International bloggers to explore Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef
Tuesday 5 June 2012

Ten international bloggers with a combined audience of over 2.5 million readers arrived in Cairns today to participate in a five-day Tourism Queensland blogging familiarisation.

The ‘Queensland Blogger Correspondents’ who hail from the UK, Canada, the US, Malaysia, Germany and Australia will participate in a five-day Tourism Queensland blogging familiarisation.

Tourism Queensland CEO Anthony Hayes said from June 5-10 the bloggers would spend time exploring Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef after completing two intensive blogging workshops delivered by Australia’s number one blogger, Darren Rowse.

“These workshops have been customised to showcase the iconic attractions of the region,” Mr Hayes said.

“One will be held overlooking the sparkling waters of Green Island on the Great Barrier Reef and the other will take place at Silky Oaks Lodge in the Daintree National Park where the trees will act as the conference room ‘walls’.

“When they’re not in workshop-mode, our ‘Queensland Blogger Correspondents’ will split into smaller groups and visit attractions of interest to their individual blogs; from wildlife parks and Indigenous art galleries, to zip-lining through the Daintree Rainforest on a jungle surfing tour, kayaking through Cape Tribulation Bay and white water rafting on the Barron River.” Mr Hayes said.

“There will also be some incredible highlights such as a scenic helicopter ride to a remote Great Barrier Reef cay and sunset cocktails and a ukulele lesson on the beach at Palm Cove.

“During their down time, they will prepare articles for Tourism Queensland’s new blog and will no doubt continue to document the adventurous experiences they’ve undertaken via their own blogs.”

Tourism Tropical North Queensland CEO Rob Giason said word-of-mouth advertising was authentic and powerful.

“We’ll be introducing the ‘Queensland Blogger Correspondents’ to our amazing natural environment and holiday activities, giving them superb material to blog about,” Mr Giason said.

“They’ll also participate in workshops to hone their skills.

“Social media continues to grow in importance as a marketing tool and we are excited to be part of this activity with Tourism Queensland and some great new advocates for holidays in Cairns & Great Barrier Reef.”

Mr Hayes said the 10 bloggers were chosen from among 767 entrants representing 53 countries, all vying for the chance to spend five days in Queensland with ProBlogger’s Darren Rowse.

“Darren is an influential social media wiz with an audience of more than five million readers for his blogs and,” he said.

“He is also an Aussie who is passionate about Queensland and wants to showcase our destinations, particularly the Great Barrier Reef, to the world.

“The 10 ‘Queensland Blogger Correspondents’ are social media experts in their own right, with some regularly blogging about motherhood, food, photography, travelling, men’s lifestyle, diving, craft, creativity and business.

“They will no doubt find Darren’s blogging training very thorough and useful.

“The cherry on top will be experiencing our unmatched world-class tourism experiences which will hopefully inspire them to promote that Queensland is where Australia shines for holidays to their expansive networks.”
