The region encompasses a diversity of coastal, island and hinterland areas as well as the city of Bundbaerg.

The Bundaberg region incorporates the City of Bundaberg, the nine Shires of Biggenden, Burnett, Eidsvold, Gayndah, Isis, Kolan, Monto, Mundubbera and Perry. It is acknowledged however that the Shire of Miriam Vale is an important asset to and stakeholder in the tourism portfolio of the region.

As the gateway to the southern section of the Great Barrier Reef and with its Coral Coast, the Bundaberg region offers a country-coast-reef smorgasbord of activities for tourists. Eco-tourism is popular, with turtle rookeries and offshore diving and fishing spots. Recreational fishing on inland waterways is also popular. Known to promote its eastern perimeter as the "Coral Coast" - with sheltered beaches at Woodgate, Elliott Heads, Innes Park, Mon Repos, Bargara, Burnett Heads and Moore Park - the region also has eight national parks along its unspoiled coastline, all of which are popular with locals and tourists.

Bundaberg Region Tourism (BRT) is the official Regional Tourism Organisation (RTO) responsible for the marketing of Bundaberg as a tourism destination.
