Remember you can’t manage what you don’t measure! Monitoring should be completed by your Green Team or a sustainability champion, included in your Business Plan, and measured as part of your business performance along with profit. Monitoring will help you to:
- Assess the progress of your initiatives;
- Identify measurable changes; and,
- Inform future planning.
If you are unsure on how to conduct monitoring, here are some simple steps:
- Regularly complete The Sustainability Checklist to identify areas that you are now achieving success
- Liaise with staff, suppliers and customers to seek their feedback on your sustainability initiatives and keep them involved in the process
- Update your Action Plan as initiatives are completed or new opportunities come to light
- Benchmark your performance against other businesses to see how you are performing in comparison. There are a number of Benchmarking and Certification Programs available to assist Queensland tourism operators with this process
- Set new goals and targets and inform your staff of the priorities for the coming period
Most importantly, remember to keep going and do not give up! Help is always available and your achievements should not go unnoticed so do not forget to communicate your successes.
