Case study - Great Ocean Road

Establishing a Sustainability Framework for the Great Ocean Road

Geelong Otway Tourism (GOT) and the regional partners of the Great Ocean Road Marketing (GORM) Alliance have recognised the development of a sustainable tourism industry along the Great Ocean Road as a priority for the future of the region. They have been proactive in their approach to sustainability and have captured the support of Local, State and Federal Governments.

In an effort to move forward along their path to sustainability, GOT and the GORM Alliance have identified a set of critical actions to progress to the next stage of sustainability.

The aim is to develop and implement an educational engagement process with industry and government. Together, the organisations will also develop a marketing campaign to increase recognition of sustainability in the region and a Sustainable Tourism Code of Conduct for the region. They will also identify and recommend environmental performance improvement tools to local operators that will assist them to track and manage their environmental footprint.

The result of the ATDP funded project will be a destination whose tourism operators and visitors are united and committed to achieving sustainability throughout the entire Great Ocean Road region.
