Savings in the City is an innovative environmental program that helps Melbourne city hotels to cut their energy, water and production of waste. The program provides leadership, support, recognition, toolkits and advice on environmental management to the 30 hotels involved in the program.
In its pilot year, the Savings in the City programme assisted the hotels to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by over 11,000 tonnes - equivalent to the average greenhouse gas emissions produced by 933 Victorian households. As well as this, one individual hotel managed to achieve cost savings of over $AUD50, 000 annually by benchmarking the above three key indicators. A side benefit for the City of Melbourne has been the creation of a data set for future planning.
More information on the program and the hotels involved can be found here.
