Indigenous - Research

The market for Indigenous tourism products can be clearly broken up into two main sectors: international and domestic.

Research shows a high demand for Indigenous tourism experiences by international visitors. Unfortunately it does not qualify this demand with information on where they want the experience, how much they are prepared to pay, how long they prefer the experience to last or what they expect from an Indigenous experience.

Given the remoteness of many of Queensland's Indigenous communities and the limited number of international visitors that travel to remote locations, it is fair to say that any Indigenous tourism venture in Queensland needs to appeal to domestic travellers to give the business a chance at being economically viable.

Tourism Queensland's research shows that domestic travellers have very low levels of interest in culturally-based Indigenous tourism experiences. The message here for Indigenous tourism ventures is that to be able to attract the domestic market and increase their chances of economic viability they must develop a product that appeals to domestic travellers.
