Carbon Reporting - Carbon Calculator

The National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 establishes a mandatory reporting system for corporate greenhouse gas emissions with established thresholds for ‘facilities’ and ‘corporations’.

The threshold for companies is 50kt CO2-e or more a year of direct emissions and for ‘facilities’ just 25 kt CO2-e or more a year. Companies and facilities in excess of these thresholds must report annually or may be subject to penalties of up to $220,000.

“Once businesses are aware of how much energy and water they are using, it is easier to track progress and work towards a more sustainable approach to operating. This will not only have a positive influence on the environment, but will also reduce the energy usage and operating costs of the business.” (read more)

To help you get a sense of which types of tourism operators will need to report, benchmarks provided through the EarthCheck program show average carbon produced by a range of tourism facilities (this does not include the overall corporations emissions, just the individual facilities):

  • Mega-international airports = 150kt CO2-e per annum*
  • Large resorts, conference centres, and cruise ships = 25kt CO2-e per annum*
  • Average 150 room hotel = 1.5kt CO2-e per annum
  • Tours and activities = 0.22kt CO2-e per annum
  • Spa facilities = 0.1 kt CO2-e per annum
  • Administrative offices = 0.25 kt CO2-e per annum

Only those marked with the * would be required to report emissions.
