Case Study - Gold Coast Sustainability

The Gold Coast Sustainability Challenge

The Sustainability Challenge is a versatile online program that allows schools children to manage their household sustainability and find the best ways to reduce their use of energy, water and production of waste.

The program is for grades 6 - 10 and links the key learning areas of SOSE, Science and Technology. The project has been trialled with 11 Gold Coast schools and plans are now afoot to expand the programme across the nation

The Sustainability Challenge has provided a community sustainability initiative which can have direct, positive effects on the protection and enhancement of Australia’s environment. At the community level, the Sustainability Challenge has provided a mechanism through which school children are directly educated on the concept and issues of sustainability and provided with the tools and knowledge to actively measure, monitor and implement strategies to improve the sustainability footprint in their own households.

"The challenge facing all communities is to learn to live more sustainably and this programme has been an important step for our city in that direction. The Earthcheck for Schools programme helped benchmark our city in terms of energy, water and waste. This information can now become a guide to household behaviour which will help all levels of government to improve their environmental-education programmes"

Ron Clarke, Mayor, Gold Coast City Council

The Sustainability Challenge is a collaborative project between the Gold Coast City Council and EC3 Global.
